Using a spice mill, grind the berries with 1 tablespoon of sugar until the berries are completely ground. Combine with remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar.
For the cocktail:
Rim a highball glass with juniper sugar. Add ice, gin and grapefruit juice and stir.
